ABOUT THE WIMMERA KART RACING CLUB
THE EARLY YEARS
The Wimmera Kart Racing Club was first formed as the Horsham Go-Kart Club in 1968, with members racing simple homemade karts with Victa motors. The location of the club was at the Dooen Recreation Reserve, north of Horsham where the track is still located today.
A decision was made by the committee during the 80’s to consolidate the club and a name change was made – to Wimmera Kart Racing Club. Also during the mid 80’s the track was re-designed and a hot-mix surface applied. In the early days the club had a membership totalling in excess of 100, with up to 60 racing competitively throughout the state.
The Club is located in Horsham which is on the banks of the Wimmera River, some 300km north-west of Melbourne, and 450km south-east of Adelaide on the Western Highway. The city of Horsham, is the capital of the productive and efficient rural region of western Victoria know as The Wimmera and is the 11th largest city in Victoria.
Highlights of Horsham include the botanic gardens, May Park, Wimmera River. Take a walk on the new Anzac Centenary Bridge which was built connecting both sides of the Wimmera River in September 2017 and visit the immaculate, highly renowned Horsham golf course which is a short drive west the newly upgraded Horsham Aquatic Centre. The population is currently around 19,000. Wheat and sheep, together with fruit and vegetables, are the main produce of the area. The town also has an industrial sector.
Horsham provides you with vibrant shopping experiences, and everything you could possibly want is to be found right here. Select from independent and chain outlets to a mix of retail businesses, from boutique and individually owned, to multinational outlets, all within easy walking distance and with good car parking. Horsham also has a new Aquatic Centre which was upgraded in 2019 to include a new outdoor pool. Maybe a picnic in the cool shaded Botanic Gardens designed by Sir William Guilfoyle, the curator of Melbourne’s royal botanic gardens. Horsham also functions as a base for those wishing to explore the Grampians National Park which is just a 30 minute drive. The city has many fine restaurants, hotels and plenty of accommodation from apartments and motels to caravan parks and bed & breakfasts, Horsham offers accommodation for all tastes.
