2015 Round 4 Race Report: Ballarat

The fourth round of the Austrans Victorian Country Series was carried out in freezing conditions at the Ballarat Kart Club a little over a week ago.

With temperatures getting as cold as -6 degrees it was going to be a cold day for karters!

Above & Below: Frozen coolant in the water-cooled engines! Most TaG engines were a solid block of ice on Sunday morning (we hear there were a few cracked bores) so organisers started the air-cooled classes first.

Corey Arnett, Cody Donald and Dylan Hollis continued their strong hold on their classes taking the round out. Arnett had challenges in the heats from Courtney Prince and Nick Schembri before breaking clear in the final to take another strong wi. Donald was in a similar position taking a clean sweep but having easy heat wins. In the final however Simon Fallon got the jump and challenged the newly crowned champ before Donald was able to break clear and take his fourth consecutive round win in the Country series. Hollis again was looking the form man in Junior Clubman but Domenic Romeo challenged the Vic champ in the early stages. Donald, who had started out of sixth, also made his way into the lead group leaving the final lap battle between three drivers. Hollis was able to hang on in a frantic last lap over Donald and Romeo.

TaG Light and TaG Heavy were one of the talking points coming into round four with the question being ‘could anyone stop Ash Lear and Scott King’, with the answer being yes! Lear, who took pole position, had a great battle all day with Brad Marsh. Marsh showed pace he hadn’t showed in 2015 country series and was able to take the win over Lear in a dominant display taking his first round win of the series. King was putting in another dominant display when an incident in the final put him to the rear of the field! Corey McCullagh and Jacob Bell were able to take over the lead positions with Mccullagh getting the break. Mccullagh took thev win over Bell and a recovering King for third.

Kacey Mann and Brodie Thomson were able to take great round wins in their respective classes with wins in the final. Mann qualified a lowly tenth but was able to move forward in the heats behind heat winners Jobe Stewart and Nicholas Sacco. Mann stormed through to take the win in the final. Thomson also only took two fourth places in the heats behind winners Christian Cowie and Beau Russell. Thomson drove a great final to come home with the round win.

Andrew Hayes and Remo Luciani have been dominant in their respective classes this season but both had their work cut out in Ballarat!

Hayes had challenges from Michael Angwin and Sam Wren. The VIC number 1 showed why he has that black plate taking home a calm collected win in the final. Luciani had a much tougher affair with Aaron Jackson taking both heat wins and leading the majority of the final. Luciani, with two laps to go, found a way through and the Victorian State Champion was able to take another nail bitting round win.

The talk at the end of the day was the wins from local drivers Paul Feely and Jarrod Dwyer. Feely, who hadn’t taken a race win all day, made his way up to third in a three way battle with Nick Wortley and John Dawkowski. In a crazy last lap Feely was able to come through and take an unlikely victory over Wortley and Dankowski. Dwyer started out of second position in the final and got the jump off the start and was able to drive away for the victory over Jordan Rae and Tim Rankin.

Coming into the penultimate round of the championship there will be some exciting racing at round five of the championship at the Hamilton Kart Club.
